Video: Photo Workflow From Start to Finish

perfectinspiration
Last week I was extremely honored to be featured in another episode of onOne Software’s Perfect Inspiration series, hosted by Brian Matiash (and I’m totally stealing it at my blog post for the day) ;) Basically, it’s like a Before/After video where you take a photo from start to finish. The photo above is the one I used and I tell a quick story about shooting it and then jumping into processing in Lightroom, Photoshop, and Perfect Effects. Plus, the website has a quick write up I did about some of the inspiration behind the photo. You can even download the “before” image if you want to follow along.

Here’s the link to the video and post over on onOne’s website. And a big thanks to everyone over at onOne and Brian for including me this week. Have a good one!

Free Lightroom Presets – Tonal Contrast Effect

tonalpost
One of my favorite effects in Photoshop plug-ins is the Tonal Contrast effect. onOne Software’s Perfect Effects has it, and Nik has it as well. But I know that lots of people still don’t use 3rd party plug-ins, so I set out to try to recreate the effect in Lightroom. After trying a bunch of different combinations I think I came pretty close.

Now, there’s definitely something in the “special sauce” that the plug-in companies use. So if you have the plug-ins (or are thinking of getting one), I’d still use them. Given the choice, I’d use the Perfect Effects Tonal Contrast effect before I’d ever use the one that I have here. But for those that don’t, this is a great alternative to help get that gritty/edgy/contrasty look right in Lightroom. Plus, as you can see below, it works on all kinds of photos – from portraits to travel to just about anything. As usual, there’s 3 different versions (Light, Medium, Strong).

NOTE: I’m going to put my usual HDR disclaimer here too, because I find that tonal contrast effects have a similar HDR-ish feel to them. So, here goes: If HDR (or tonal contrast) is the kind of thing that incites anger and criticism from you, then these presets aren’t for you. Don’t download, don’t try them out and don’t leave a negative comment on how HDR (or tonal contrast) is bastardizing photography and how everyone that uses it is a horrible person ;)

Here’s a few samples. You really have to try the presets out though, since they don’t show up as well when the images are small.

Hope you enjoy. Have a good one!

Teaching Lightroom In Austin, Texas Today

Hey everyone. I’m really psyched to be back in Austin today teaching my Lightroom seminar to nearly 400 people. I just got back from my favorite tex-mex restaurant, Chuy’s (one of my favorite things about coming to Austin). Now, last time I was here was almost exactly 2 years ago. Sadly, it snowed in some surrounding areas and downtown Austin was covered in ice. So only about half the people were able to show up for the seminar. I’m happy to report that today it’s supposed to be beautiful so we shouldn’t have any wintery-weather issues.

Anyway, I’ve been playing catch up all day from being out of the office last week and then for a couple of days this week, so there’s not much to report. I did, however, just find out that everyone who signs up for my live compositing pre-conference workshop at Photoshop World (co-teaching Glyn Dewis) will get my compositing book for free.

And don’t forget I have some more Lightroom seminars coming up. I’ll be in Arlington, TX and Atlanta in mid-February and Phoenix on March 22nd (it’s not up on the website yet but it will be soon).

As always, if you’re reading this and coming out to the seminar today, make sure you come up and say hi. Have a good one!

Lightroom Magazine Update

airport1
I’m heading out to Austin today for my Lightroom seminar tomorrow. It’s a miserable day for air travel in the southeast (hence the photo above). After racing to make a connection in Atlanta, I’ve just gone through the worst turbulence I think I’ve ever felt. Anyway, while I’m in the air I thought I’d write a quick update on some common Q&A’s I’ve gotten for Lightroom Magazine (link to app store).

DISCLAIMER: This post is only meant for people who have an iPad AND have (or wish to) download the Lightroom Magazine app on their iPad. If you don’t fall into that category, then stop reading now because you’ll just end up leaving a mean comment that will eventually get deleted.

Q. Are the download issues resolved? It was taking forever to download or it simply just timed out on me.
A. Yes! Thank god! There were some issues with where the file was hosted and it’s a longer story than you care to hear. But we got everything sorted out in the first few days, and I haven’t heard a peep about long download times since.

Q. Will you still be including Lightroom articles in Photoshop User Magazine?
A. Of course. It’s kinda funny because people seemed to automatically assume the worst – that we were launching a Lightroom magazine to make more money, by taking away Lightroom content from Photoshop User magazine. Now, don’t get me wrong. We’re definitely launching Lightroom magazine to be profitable, but we’re not taking anything away from Photoshop User Magazine. It’s still the same magazine it always was with the same amount of Lightroom content. But now, people who don’t use Photoshop much (and believe me, my seminars tell me those numbers are growing), can have a magazine totally dedicated to the program they use most.

Q. Why isn’t the magazine app in Newsstand?
A. Because Newsstand requires that you have subscriptions. Right now we don’t have subscriptions, so we can’t be in Newsstand.

Q. What about subscriptions? Will you offer them?
A. For now, we’re not planning on it. Along with subscriptions, comes a whole slew of other issues. For now, we’d like to concentrate on creating a great magazine app.

Q. Is it true you guys get huge kick backs from Apple for releasing iOS only magazine apps?
A. Absolutely! In fact, I’m not even sure why we’re charging $4.99 for the magazine. With the money we make in kickbacks from making an iOS only magazine app, we’ve been burning $100 dollar bills as kindling for our fires, we have so much of it ;) (that’s a winky face by the way, which means I’m kidding).

(This photo is just here because I thought the clouds outside of my plane looked cool, and to divert your attention from the iOS/Android debate that will eventually happen :) )

Q. Why did you include Photoshop content in a Lightroom magazine? I’d rather the Before/After video using Lightroom and Photoshop stop at the point where you’re done with Lightroom. Don’t we already have Photoshop User magazine for that stuff?
A. Yes, Photoshop User is the magazine for Photoshop. But I chose to include Photoshop content in the magazine (mostly just the Before and After video) because not including it, is only showing people part of the process. Let’s face it, Lightroom’s retouching, cloning and healing tools just aren’t there. If you’ve got a telephone wire in your photo you’d like to remove, you need Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. Plus, there’s a bunch of other things you can use Photoshop for. So, while Lightroom is the program we all start in, sometimes you need that extra step. Trust me, I hear more and more from people out there that Lightroom is the only program they use and they don’t want to leave it. If that works for ya’, then great. But there are things it just can’t do and I think part of having a magazine on Lightroom is showing you when you’ll need something else. And if you really just want a Lightroom Before/After video then you can simply press the STOP button when I jump to Photoshop.

Q. What about the Android version?
A. Really?! :) Nothing has changed. Like before, consider yourself warned before you leave a comment.

To finish up, I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who has made this launch of Lightroom Magazine a success. We’ve already shattered our initial estimates on how many people we thought would download the magazine. I do apologize for any inconvenience concerning download issues at first and hopefully all of those problems are past us. We’re finishing up Issue #3 now, and I’ll keep you posted with more info soon. Thanks :)

The Phrase Photographers Hate: “Your Camera Takes Great Photos!”

brian1This past weekend some of my close family (uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews) were in town for a family event. Being the only photographer in the family, I try to bring my camera with me when we get together. Not just for big group photos, but I know how hard it is for families to get nice photos taken of themselves, so I’ll grab a few of my cousins with their kids, and my uncles/aunts with their grandchildren. Plus, as a writer, once you use one family member in a book, guess what. All of the others start to ask when they’re going to get in a book too ;)

Anyway, I took the photo you see here of one of my close cousins, Brian (who I grew up with seeing often) and his son Dean. I used my Nikon D800 with the Nikon 70-200mm lens on and just followed them around as they played, trying to coax Dean into being cute (not a hard thing when you have a cute kid). That’s why I love the 70-200 lens. It lets you stay back far enough from the action, so as to not scare the kids into wondering what this person with this huge camera is doing 2 feet away from them.

The Phrase We All Know And Love
Well, once I showed Brian, he loved the photo. So much so that an older aunt of mine heard, and came over to see it. And wouldn’t ya know it… what’s the first thing she said? “Wow! Your camera takes such great pictures!”. What do you say to that? Especially when it’s one of your aunts. I resisted the urge to say one of my favorite comebacks to that statement. A comeback I heard years ago and have yet to hear a better one: “Gee thanks… and your mouth makes such stupid comments”. But she’s my aunt so I held back. :)

Honestly, it’s not really a great comment to say to anyone. Most people don’t know any better. And if we’re truthful with ourselves, it IS partly the camera right? I mean, I would have never gotten a photo with the sharpness and depth of field with a point-n-shoot. And even with the D800, I’d have never gotten that photo with many other lenses. But still, it’s always something that irks us photographers.
BTW… yes, I’ve heard the response about how you’d never ask a cook what pots and pans he uses. I just like the one I wrote above better ;)

Techie Photo Info
Anyway, that’s my story for the day. As for photo info it’s below.
• First, I position the people between me and the sun, so the sun is behind them. That’s what gives the nice hair/edge light behind them.
• I put the camera on continuous shooting mode, Aperture priority, and set the Aperture at f/2.8.
• I rack out the lens to 200mm (don’t you like the camera lingo? “Racked out” just means zoomed as far as the lens will go) and stand back far enough to compose.
• At 200mm you’ve got some good distance between you and the subject. One last key elements is to make sure the subject is a good distance away from their background (at least 10 feet). All of this separation gives you those beautiful soft backgrounds that really help the people stand out.
• After that, it’s all about luck. I just shoot. I don’t pose much. I just watch them have fun and try to capture some of the action.
• Keep an eye on your shutter speed. Once it starts dipping below 1/250 to 1/125 I start increasing my ISO. As long as they’re not moving too much, and you try to capture the still moments after a movement, you’ll get sharp photos.

Post-Processing
I processed the photo in Lightroom with some minimal shadow and highlight settings. Then I jumped into onOne Perfect Effects and added the Vintage Blue/Yellow preset along with the Big Softy vignette preset. I finished off with some sharpening and that’s about it. This one took all of 3 minutes to work.

Interesting/Amazing Side Story About My Cousin: It’s a miracle that Brian is even here today. He was actually working in the 2nd tower in the World Trade Center on September 11th. He was around the same floor that the 2nd plane hit the tower (extremely close to where the plane actually hit). It’s a long story, but he hadn’t evacuated so he was actually on that floor when the plane hit. Sadly, many people around his immediate area didn’t make it out, and it’s an absolute miracle that he did. The 60 or so minutes our family had to spend wondering what happened to him were some of the longest minutes I can remember.

Free Lightroom Presets – Black & White HDR Presets for Landscapes

hdrbw1post
Some of the most popular presets I have are the HDR presets I created for Lightroom 4. As I looked through my website stats, I also realized that some of the other most popular presets were the black and white presets for both landscapes and portraits. Then it hit me – these could go perfectly together. People love the grit, edginess, and style that HDR presets give. And people love the look and feel of black and white. So why not put ‘em together?

So that’s just what I did this week. You’ll find they work best on landscape, travel and outdoor photos. I thought of doing some portrait ones, but HDR doesn’t look that great on people. They have 2 levels of intensity (Light, Strong). I tried 3, like I usually do, but there wasn’t enough difference between them so I went with 2.

NOTE: If HDR is the kind of thing that incites anger and criticism from you, then these presets aren’t for you. Don’t download, don’t try them out and don’t leave a negative comment on how HDR is bastardizing photography and how everyone that uses it is a horrible person ;)

Here’s a few samples. You really have to try the presets out though, since they don’t show up as well when the images are small.

Hope you enjoy. Have a good one!
